The Coleman-Hunt residence is located to the north of Nevada City, with westerly views toward the Sacramento Valley. The gently sloped site contains many large rock outcrops and live oak trees. A major feature of the design called for shaping the structure around one of the prominent outcroppings and tree groves, thereby creating a natural entry garden space.
The residence consists of two bedroom wings joined by a common space which incorporates an open living, dining and kitchen area. Main features in the common space are a large Rumford fireplace, glass openings to the courtyard, and French doors which open to a large covered patio designed for year-around outdoor living. Exterior finishes include stucco walls and vinyl framed windows. The interior spaces have stained concrete radiant heated floor, drywall surfaces painted a variety of colors, and craftsman style Douglas fir and mahogany trim.
The owner, Jeff Coleman, is a furniture maker who contributed a number of finishing details, including the entry door. Jeff Gold & Associates provided the architectural design, and Erickson Construction Company was the general contractor for this project completed in 2002.
